explanations, expressions, or equations.
Summary : This book is
about a mother duck and her five ducklings going swimming. They went swimming
over the hill and far away. Every day
the mother duck calls to her ducklings but, she realize she is left with one
less. The other ducklings remained behind the mother, until they went far away
and there were no ducklings left. The mother duck becomes sad and calls to her
ducklings. In the end all five ducklings go back to their mother.
Ratings: ***** I love
this book and the nursery song, videos, and activities you can do with it. It
teaches children how to count, subtract, add back what was taken away, and
tells an engaging story. Children can relate to the mothers emotion feeling sad
and it can be useful to read to a child that is really attached to someone,
that when they leave they will come back.

Classroom Ideas: This
book can be used to teach mathematical concepts in addition and subtraction.
However, the book demonstrates subtraction more. Students in groups of fives
can act out the book and song with or without the help of the teachers. The
students may pretend they are swimming in a line behind the mother duck. During
the part “Mama Duck
said quack quack quack but only____ ducks came back” one student/duck will come off the line. After, the
students as a whole will count how much is left on the line until there are 0.
Then, they all will come back behind the mother duck and count how much ducks
there are. Each group will have a turn. They could also use manipulative as the
song plays. They must have five of the object. As one duck disappear, they must
remove one of the manipulative each time. They must show and say how much is
left when they re group. For addition, students can play around if they have
two ducks and the teacher say for example, add one duck and ask how many ducks
you have. The answer will be three. 2+1=3
I love this book! I have never read this book to my class and after reading your activities I would really like to use it in my class. I really enjoy how this book can teach mathematical concepts in a fun way, having the children act out each duck is great way for every student to be involved and particiapte. This activity really gives them a visual of what subtraction is and its fun. Using visuals and manipulative's is key to making math fun and interesting and can help special needs children and english language students because they are working together and acting it out and seeing the math!
